on this day in history...

Brigitte Bardot was born in
Paris, France.

bardot meets picasso

During the 1956 International Cannes Film Festival, 21-year-old Brigitte Bardot paid a visit to legendary painter Pablo Picasso at his studio in the South of France. In her memoir, Bardot writes, “He showed me his canvases, his ceramics, his studio. He was simple, intelligent, a bit indifferent and lovely. That was our first and last encounter. I often wanted to ask him to make a portrait of me, but I never dared…” Picasso’s then-muse, 19-year-old Lydia Corbett (the artist’s famous “ponytail girl”), tells a slightly different version of the story. Corbett, Picasso’s next-door neighbor, recalls, “Bardot came [to Picasso’s studio] with another neighbor, the film director Roger Vadim… She really wanted to be painted by him but Picasso refused, saying he would only have one model at a time…” How wonderful Lydia must have felt—Picasso (of all people) turned down Bardot for her! Despite the fact that the starlet did not have her portrait drawn, BB still has these invaluable photographs to remember her visit to the painter’s studio. I say that, next to a likeness, a photo shoot with Picasso is certainly the next best thing.

petit bateau's fall 2010 lookbook

Petit Bateau’s fall 2010 lookbook is so perfectly French—I’m inspired. That nautical-striped sweater is calling my name! And how cute is the model and her tousled Brigitte Bardot-esqe locks? I need to figure out how to do that. Ahh, I wish I were better at styling my hair! I’m the worst. Anywho, I highly recommend that you check out the rest of the lookbook at Refinery 29 (its freaking adorable).
