j.crew's wayuu mochila bag

The moment I saw this bag in the June J.Crew catalogue, I knew I had to have it! I was lucky enough to purchase it before it sold out, but I can't imagine that they wouldn't restock it. The bag is especially cool because it's handwoven by the women of the Wayuu tribe, "an indegenous community that has lived along the coast of Columbia and Venezuela for centuries." I'd love to purchase a something like it for my little sister-- does anyone know of an online vendor who sells similar products? Any shared knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!
I was one of the people that worked in the Wayuu Mochila Project for BeLive 2009. Thanks to this initiative and the amazing leadership of Lauren Santo Domingo, we got a group of 40 world-renowned designers to intervene the Wayuu hand-woven handicraft. J Crew was one of the invited designers and fell in love with the bags! Silvia Tcherassi also included the mochila bags as a party version in her new fall-winter collection. We are so proud of this amazing initiative and the push it has given the Wayuu women. We hope this project will continue bringing such a positive impact to communities as to the world of fashion! If you would like further details on the project don't hesitate to visit BeLive webpage at www.belivecolombia.org
Thank you so much!

This is the closest I have come--I just got my J.Crew Catalog this week and as soon as I got online I saw it was sold out. I've been looking for them ever since.

I am from the Wayuu magic land, "La Guajira" peninsula the Northeast part of South America, I wear, all the time, these attractive unique colorful "mochilas" . On my road, many people ask me for my bags, therefore, I decided to bring with me some to USA anytime that I visit my land. You could contact me by ilacouture@yahoo.com for the pictures, just from/to USA.

The Wayuu mochila is becoming a national symbol for Colombia. My sisters and I own CordoBags. We have Wayuu mochilas and another style of mochila handcrafted on a loom. We also have cana flecha bags. We have a direct relationship with the tribes making our products.

Our website is being under construction, soon we'll be able to sell on line, but in the mean time you can check http://cordobags.com/
Thanks for having this blog, I didn't realize how many people like these bags. No matter where you buy them from you'll be helping the Wayuu women.

Hi, I have a fair trade store called Global Handmade Hope. We have several of these bags and more are expected to arrive from Colombia with in the next couple of weeks. I feel in love with the bags on trip to Colombia and brought them back to sell. Next thing I knew they were being featured in J. Crew and In Style. So wonderful to see these women getting an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty through their craft. Our web is www.GlobalHandmadeHope.com
